What are the symptoms of syphilis?

What to Watch For:


  • Chancre (painless sore) on or around genitals or mouth within three weeks of exposure


  • Non-itchy rash, flu-like symptoms, and swollen glands

How You Can Get It:

Spread during vaginal, anal, and oral sex with someone who has syphilis. Also through skin to skin contact.

 Long-term Effects if Untreated:

  • You can give syphilis to your sexual partner(s).
  • A mother with syphilis can give it to her baby during childbirth or have a miscarriage.
  • Can cause heart disease, brain damage, blindness, and death.


Syphilis is curable with antibiotics prescribed by a physician.
